Ask Michele: Answering your Questions on Doctor Radio

January 21, 2012

Tim Johnson (a Stylist at the salon) and I had a great time doing the Doctor Radio program on Sirius/XM this week (station 81 for those of you with access!).   Hosted by the lovely Dr. Marina Kurian, this week’s show focused on winter hair, and all the problems that come with it.  Today is New York City’s first true snow storm of the season, so what better way to celebrate than sharing our feedback on your frequently asked winter hair care questions!

This is the second time I’ve appeared with Tim on the show, and we make quite the team.  It’s so nice to have a Stylist to brainstorm with and hear his perspective on caller questions.  Here were some of the concerns we addressed:

What’s the best way to deal with static hair?

Who doesn’t deal with static hair in the winter?  When this question came up, Tim had some genius ideas; spray a little Static Guard onto your brush before you put it through your hair, or even use fabric softener sheets (who knew?!).

Should I change my hair care routine in the winter?

It’s always good to alternate your shampoos and conditioners, especially in the winter.  Dry hair needs extra moisture this time of year.   Some of my favorites are L’Oreal Professionnel’s Intense Repair (adds moisture and repairs damaged tresses) and Liss Ultime (great for smoothing frizzy hair).  L’Oreal Professionnel also recently introduced Mythic Oil.  I suggest using either pre- or post-blow dry for added shine and to quench thirsty hair.  An awesome product!  Tim also suggested coconut oil as an at-home alternative.

How can I address thinning hair?

We had a few suggestions:

Tim suggested three supplements:  Biotin, MSM, and Pycnogenol.   Each works to enhance hair growth, texture, density, and vibrancy.  And taken together, they can have a powerful effect on your hair!  As always, we suggest checking with your doctor before trying any new supplements.

L’Oreal Professionnel’s Volume Expand Shampoo & Conditioner is our go-to product for client’s wanting extra oomph.

Tim also suggested skipping the shampoo in favor of a dry shampoo, which adds that extra volume to your roots.

And on to the star product, Roy Teeluck’s soon-to-be launched Concentré de Collagène.   A serum that infuses much-needed collagen into your scalp, it fosters a healthy environment for your hair to grow stronger, shinier, and more resilient.  After the age of 25, your skin produces less and less collagen.  This product replenishes and stimulate collagen production for amazing results.

Try our new luxurious in-salon Collagen Spa Treatment (the head massage alone is worth it!) and stay tuned to Roy’s Online Boutique to purchase!  Trust me, this stuff works!

And one of our favorite questions…..

I highlight my hair, but feel like it is becoming over-processed.  Should I switch to a single process instead?

Great question!  I asked the caller if her colorist uses foils, as foils tend to be “heavy” on the hair and often lead to over-highlighting.  At Roy Teeluck, we only use the balayage technique, which allows for precise, and customized placement of color.  Which means softer outgrowth, and no overlap of highlights.  This also means less damage to the hair.

To repair current damage, I suggested trimming the ends and using a deep conditioning treatment.  We have in-house Powerdose treatments (my old stand-by!) that treats the hair by sealing the cuticle.  One application can last 8-10 shampoos.

I can’t wait for our next guest appearance; working with Tim is always a treat!
