Behind-the-Scenes: Grammy Pop-Up Beauty Bar

February 15, 2012

What an amazing roller coaster in LA!  Fantastic appointments with groovy editors, VIPs, long time clients, and musicians.  I kicked it off with a cocktail party hosted at Cristophe Beverly Hills with L’Oreal Professionnel and Algenist.

Rock and Roll takes the guise of many faces, but the Australian Rock Band the Sick Puppies are the real deal.  Touring the world with some of the biggest names in the business, their latest release Sick Puppies Live At the House Of Blues Cleveland capture the band in full force.  The band stopped by our Grammy Beauty Bar kick-off party.

Members of the Sick Puppies

Lead Singer Shim Moore even came in for a full hair make over, where we had a chance to talk Rock and Roll leading up to the Grammys on Sunday.

Shim’s reaction?  “I honestly got the best cut I ever had! He knew exactly what my hair needed to go with my face and that is the hardest thing.  I can’t wait to head back to NYC to see him again.”

On the opposite end of the music spectrum is musician and singer El Debarge Jr.  If his name sounds familiar, his dad is 80s pop phenomenon of the same name.  A definite talent to watch in the future.  Thank you to everyone for making the event such an amazing success!  More exciting news to come…

Making a Difference with Dress for Sucess

February 4, 2012

I am thrilled to announce my partnership with Dress for Success this Sunday on CBS Sunday Morning (those of you in NYC, that’s cable channel 2 at 9am). My friend Sigourney Weaver appears with me on the segment to discuss the importance of organizations such as DFS.  At a time when many are struggling to find their bearings in an uncertain world, it is an honor work with such an esteemed organization.

My wonderful team and I have been providing beauty services at the salon for select DFS program graduates. To see the confidence and excitement on their faces after a visit to the salon is truly amazing.  I look forward to continuing our reach to help disadvantaged women gain a strong footing; confident and ready for the world.  Stay tuned – we’ve only just begun!

Simply Irresistible

February 2, 2012

One week until my Grammy Beauty Bar officially kicks-off, starting with a cocktail party co-hosted with Cristophe at his salon in Beverly Hills next Thursday.  The buzz is growing; can’t wait to celebrate with everyone.

In the lead up to the big event, it feels appropriate to pay homage to another source of inspiration, the late Robert Palmer.  One of the defining icons of the MTV age (and a Grammy winner), his videos left an indelible mark on fashion & beauty.  Dark slicked back hair, red lips, dramatic eyes.  The look is still emulated in fashion campaigns today (think Lanvin and Tom Ford).

The iconic look

The videos themselves borrowed heavily from the influence of artist Patrick Nagel, who’s most famous for his cover of Duran Duran’s Rio album.  Part punk, part 80s rock, part Art Deco… the list goes on.  Chic, chic, chic to the end.

Paint it Black on the Red Carpet

January 29, 2012

Cathy Horyn of the New York Times is always spot on.  Not afraid to speak her mind, and critique the seemingly untouchable fashion flock, she might be a controversial figure to some but you can’t deny her wit and sharp eye.  Her recent piece on the Paris Couture shows gave an interesting take on fashion in Hollywood.   In the midst of award season, it’s something to ponder.

Having spent many years in LA, I’d like to see a bit more daring from the Hollywood set.  That’s why I love the influence actress Rooney Mara and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo bring this award season. Her drastic change from beachy waves to a black, blunt cut is striking.   While I’m not the first to note this change (she is all over the news these days), I do believe she is a powerful example for other women to follow.  Why?

Throughout my many years in the industry, I do find it hard to convince some of my clients to think outside of the box.  Hair is such a comfort factor in how a women perceives herself.  ”Roy, I don’t want to cut my hair – please keep it long!” or “I’ve been blond forever…. what do you mean go dark?!”.  Making an unconventional change is a hard sell.  I’m not an advocate of an edgy-look for every client, but I challenge women to be open to a fresh perspective.  You just might surprise yourself…..

In fact, my favorite type of client is the one who sits in my chair and says “Roy, I trust you.  Work your magic”.

In the midst of this awards season, here’s to pushing for some daring on the red carpet, hair and otherwise.  I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for those who push the style envelope.

Mr. Teeluck Goes to Washington

January 27, 2012

I love D.C.  What a great second trip to meet clients – old and new – and explore the city.  One thing is clear; this city has a definite energy that easily sucks you in.

My buddy Rick took me to the hot place to be, Tosca.  Fantastic ambience, people-watching, food, conversation.  And, I enjoyed a wonderful evening with Jane catching up.

I’ve had an amazing time meeting new friends, and getting to inside dish.  But above all, what a true pleasure to transform women into feeling more confident, sexy, and powerful – ready to take on the world!  Future plans in the works to make a true footprint on the DC scene.  Can’t wait for my next big event I’m hatching for DC… stay tuned!

The Rock and Roll Influence

January 26, 2012

Two weeks from now, I’ll kick off my Grammy Beauty Bar in Beverly Hills.  Designed to be a one-stop beauty destination, I’m excited to be a part of the energy leading up to the show.  While the Grammys may have its set of detractors, I’m all for anything that celebrates music.  In any form.  My favorites? That’s an easy answer – The Clash and The Jam.  To me, they ARE rock and roll.  Music, talent, attitude.  The epitome of style. Personal, raw, and with passion and heart. Here’s to injecting a dose of punk into this year’s awards.

Ask Michele: Answering your Questions on Doctor Radio

January 21, 2012

Tim Johnson (a Stylist at the salon) and I had a great time doing the Doctor Radio program on Sirius/XM this week (station 81 for those of you with access!).   Hosted by the lovely Dr. Marina Kurian, this week’s show focused on winter hair, and all the problems that come with it.  Today is New York City’s first true snow storm of the season, so what better way to celebrate than sharing our feedback on your frequently asked winter hair care questions!

This is the second time I’ve appeared with Tim on the show, and we make quite the team.  It’s so nice to have a Stylist to brainstorm with and hear his perspective on caller questions.  Here were some of the concerns we addressed:

What’s the best way to deal with static hair?

Who doesn’t deal with static hair in the winter?  When this question came up, Tim had some genius ideas; spray a little Static Guard onto your brush before you put it through your hair, or even use fabric softener sheets (who knew?!).

Should I change my hair care routine in the winter?

It’s always good to alternate your shampoos and conditioners, especially in the winter.  Dry hair needs extra moisture this time of year.   Some of my favorites are L’Oreal Professionnel’s Intense Repair (adds moisture and repairs damaged tresses) and Liss Ultime (great for smoothing frizzy hair).  L’Oreal Professionnel also recently introduced Mythic Oil.  I suggest using either pre- or post-blow dry for added shine and to quench thirsty hair.  An awesome product!  Tim also suggested coconut oil as an at-home alternative.

How can I address thinning hair?

We had a few suggestions:

Tim suggested three supplements:  Biotin, MSM, and Pycnogenol.   Each works to enhance hair growth, texture, density, and vibrancy.  And taken together, they can have a powerful effect on your hair!  As always, we suggest checking with your doctor before trying any new supplements.

L’Oreal Professionnel’s Volume Expand Shampoo & Conditioner is our go-to product for client’s wanting extra oomph.

Tim also suggested skipping the shampoo in favor of a dry shampoo, which adds that extra volume to your roots.

And on to the star product, Roy Teeluck’s soon-to-be launched Concentré de Collagène.   A serum that infuses much-needed collagen into your scalp, it fosters a healthy environment for your hair to grow stronger, shinier, and more resilient.  After the age of 25, your skin produces less and less collagen.  This product replenishes and stimulate collagen production for amazing results.

Try our new luxurious in-salon Collagen Spa Treatment (the head massage alone is worth it!) and stay tuned to Roy’s Online Boutique to purchase!  Trust me, this stuff works!

And one of our favorite questions…..

I highlight my hair, but feel like it is becoming over-processed.  Should I switch to a single process instead?

Great question!  I asked the caller if her colorist uses foils, as foils tend to be “heavy” on the hair and often lead to over-highlighting.  At Roy Teeluck, we only use the balayage technique, which allows for precise, and customized placement of color.  Which means softer outgrowth, and no overlap of highlights.  This also means less damage to the hair.

To repair current damage, I suggested trimming the ends and using a deep conditioning treatment.  We have in-house Powerdose treatments (my old stand-by!) that treats the hair by sealing the cuticle.  One application can last 8-10 shampoos.

I can’t wait for our next guest appearance; working with Tim is always a treat!

Ask Michele: Resolutions & Transformations – Part Three

January 13, 2012

Part Three of a Three Part Series on Transforming Your Hair

In Part Three of this series, I’ll discuss the transformation from dark to blond.  What’s involved?

Take Katie.  A natural blond since birth, Katie experimented with different shade of blond throughout high school.  Until her senior year.  Surrounded by friends with rich, shiny, brunette hair, Katie opted to go darker with the idea she would be taken more seriously.

Katie in highschool: before her switch to the dark side

Katie's dark transformation her senior year

But closing that chapter of her life caused Katie to rethink her sense of self.  The brunette no longer seemed right; she longed to recapture the blond of her youth.  While most friends and family had encouraged her all along to go back to her blond roots, Katie waited until she truly felt ready for the change.

Making a drastic change with your hair color is always a process, but changing from dark to blond is a much more challenging road.  It’s like growing out a bad haircut; patience and an expert hand are crucial.

My first step was doing heavy highlights to start slowly painting the blond back in.  As this inflicts trauma on your hair, I always recommend clients add on a L’Oreal Professionnel Fiberceutic Powerdose the day of their color.  And, follow-up with at-home use of Absolut Repair Shampoo & Conditioner to infuse moisture and strengthen the hair fiber.  I also encourage a haircut to help trim split ends and keep hair healthy.

Back to Blond!

Within 6-7 weeks, the same routine should be repeated again.  By your third visit, you will start to notice a visible improvement.

While many are impatient to transform into that platinum blond overnight, doing so risks extreme damage to your fragile locks.  Be patient, and seek the advice of a trained professional to achieve the best results.  Also keep in mind that blond may appear brassy because the colorist is working with a dark base.  Glazes and toners are a temporary fix, and tend to wash out quickly.  But following a strict regimen of proper at-home care and scheduling consistent salon appointments, you will achieve the blond of your dreams!
